During the Second World War (1939-1944), thousands of people crossed the Pyrenees into Spain to escape Nazi barbarism or join the Allied army in North Africa or England. The mountain passes silently witnessed their journey to freedom.
It’s estimated that between 60 and 80 thousand escapees arrived in Spain during this period, braving high peaks, harsh weather and border surveillance.
One of the routes connecting the French departments of Ariège and Haute-Garonne with Pallars Sobirà, known as “The Freedom Trail”, passed through Sort. Sort Prison was often the arrival point for those crossing the Pyrenees and falling into the hands of a Francoist Spain collaborating with the Nazi regime.
The museum now commemorates these escapes and honours those who made them.
It offers guided tours of Sort’s historical sites, which can be reserved in advance.
