Majestic peaks reaching towards the sky, alpine meadows and vast rock basins define a high-mountain landscape abundant in wildlife and vegetation. With over 200 glacial lakes and numerous crystal-clear streams and rivers, water takes the spotlight in Catalonia’s sole National Park. In winter, a pristine blanket of white snow covers everything, while in summer, as it melts away, herds of brown cows, small sheep and Pyrenean horses ascend to graze.
The town of Sort enjoys privileged access to Aigüestortes National Park through the Vall d’Àssua, home to peaks like Montsent de Pallars (2,883 m), Montorroio (2,862 m) and Pic de la Mainera (2,909 m). Climbing these peaks, embarking on a family outing to Estanys de la Mainera or cycling through Muntanya de Llessui are all ways to explore the National Park, avoiding the crowds of traditional entry points and embracing the pure beauty of the Pyrenean high mountain!
Moreover, two of the National Park’s circular routes pass through Vall d’Àssua: Camins Vius (hiking) and Pedals de Foc (mountain biking), offering fantastic opportunities to explore the entire park from Llessui.
For a fulfilling visit to the National Park, we recommend utilising the services of local activity companies or hiring a guide from the National Park Guides Association.
